In parts, yes. But on the whole, worth the time (it's around 1200 pages). Its able to delve into character motivations and backstories quite a bit more. I'm certainly not reading it again, but it's a nice companion piece to the show if you're looking for more immersion.
Shogun was fantastic! The world building in particular was brilliant.
