Today, something a little offbeat.
First though, a little context. Reviving old cars is an expensive and heartbreaking hobby. Skilled technicians, genuine spares and endless patience are all increasingly rare commodities. Pain notwithstanding, the journey in transforming a decrepit barn find into something that looks like it just rolled off the showroom floor can be super rewarding. Especially when you’re working on a very special car, with a unique provenance.
For example, this car hadn’t moved in fifty years - and it was just auctioned for US$9.3 million:
But that 300SL is a super rare, much coveted exotic. The buyer could very well spend another fortune reviving it and still make a hefty profit, if they wish. And yet, it will never be driven freely on public roads- it’s just too valuable. What about a car that’s less famous, less of an investment, and that only a handful of people will recognise as special?
Here’s a lovingly restored Mercedes that is in very good hands - the owner is making it into a fully functional camper! An unthinkable number of hours must’ve gone into bringing it to its present condition. Fitting, given its rich history. The video is very well made, and does full justice to this rare car and its unique story. Make use of the subtitles if, like me, you don’t speak Malayalam.
